Correcting imbalance at its root
Explore Ayurveda’s structured and guided approach to cleansing, designed to remove accumulated toxins and restore balance.
The Role of Cleansing in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, cleansing is not approached as a quick reset, but as a structured and considered process. Ayurvedic cleansing is designed to remove accumulated toxins from the body and address imbalance at its root.
Over time, improper diet, lifestyle, stress, and environmental factors can lead to the build-up of toxins within the system. These can disrupt normal physiological function and contribute to the development of symptoms and disease. Cleansing helps to restore your health by removing toxins, improving bodily function, and supporting clarity of mind and emotional stability.
Mild cleansing can often be supported through appropriate dietary adjustments, alongside simple herbal support. For deeper levels of cleansing, the body is first prepared through processes such as oiling and heat, allowing toxins to be loosened and mobilised. These are then guided out of the body through specific therapeutic procedures. By clearing these underlying toxins, rather than just masking symptoms, this approach supports deeper restoration and long-term health.
Because of its depth, Ayurvedic Cleansing is always recommended following a consultation. It is a significant process that requires careful preparation and guidance.

Udwarthanam is a dry, heating, penetrating and invigorating full-body massage using medicated powdered herbs. Brisk strokes are used to create friction and heat in the body breaking down excess body fat, increasing circulation, decreasing lethargy, reducing fluid retention and releasing toxins. This treatment is used for an array of conditions but is highly recommended to support weight loss or detoxification programs alongside dietary and lifestyle suggestions. It is good for all doshas but particularly kapha. Additional benefits include rejuvenation and regeneration of the skin and enhanced skin complexion.
Udwarthanam can be translated as ‘to move something in an upward direction’. This comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Urdhwa’ meaning ‘Upward’ and ‘Varthanam’ meaning ‘to move’. Unlike Abhyanga, which is often performed by moving down the body, the practice of Udwarthanam is given in an upward direction against the direction of the body hair.
The medicated herbal powders used are dry and heating in nature and contain nerve-stimulating and nourishing agents. The deep pressure and friction of the heating massage allow the herbal essence of the powders to be absorbed creating a liquifying action in the body increasing circulation of the blood and lymphatics. This opens pores, removes blockages, stimulates the motor and sensory nerve endings and increases metabolism.
Traditionally, Udwarthanam may be suggested for some individuals as part of Dinacharya (daily practices) advised in Ayurveda for maintaining optimal health. It can also be used as a Purvakarma (preparatory treatment) for ayurvedic Panchakarma. It is considered a kaphahara and vatahara therapy which simply means it helps to reduce morbid kapha and vata.

Shiro is head and Dhara is a stream. Shirodhara is a nourishing and rejuvenating head therapy that uses a continuously moving stream of herbal oil/liquid on the forehead and scalp to remove mental clutter, release stress and anxiety, eliciting a deep state of relaxation. It is especially useful in chronic headaches or migraines, helps improve sleep and brings grounding to the nervous system. It is extremely useful in alleviating Vata and Pitta disorders.
Ayurveda views the human body as an inverted tree, where the head serves as the root, the thorax and abdomen form the trunk, and the limbs extend as branches. Just as roots sustain and nourish a tree, the head functions as the command center of the body, guiding its overall well-being. This is why it is referred to as Uttamanga—the supreme organ. When the head is well cared for, the entire body operates harmoniously.
Shirodhara is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy designed to nourish and rejuvenate the head. In this treatment, warm oil (or other therapeutic liquids) is poured in a continuous stream over the forehead, an area rich in nerve endings. The gentle pressure creates a subtle vibration, allowing the liquid to deeply penetrate the scalp and nervous system, inducing a profound state of relaxation. This therapy calms the mind, soothes the nervous system, and fosters neurophysiological balance. It promotes deep inner awareness, tranquility, and mental clarity while gently stimulating the Ajna Chakra (Third Eye) and marma points on the forehead, helping to relieve sensory overload and enhance focus.
