Oiling as a Therapeutic Practice
In Ayurveda, oiling is known as Snehana and is a central therapeutic practice. The word Sneha translates to both oil and love. Oiling the body is therefore considered an act of care, a way of nourishing and supporting the system as a whole, promoting deep relaxation and rejuvenation.
Oil helps to loosen and mobilise toxins within the body, preparing them for elimination. When applied externally with intention, it helps the nervous system settle, allowing the body to move into a deeper state of rest and ease. This makes it especially supportive in times of stress, fatigue, or depletion. It also supports muscle health, joint mobility and healthy, nourished skin.
In Ayurvedic oil therapies, different oils are selected based on the individual and their condition, allowing treatment to be tailored in a precise and personalised way. Full-body treatments can also be combined with steam therapy, known as Swedana, which helps to open the channels, support the release of toxins, and enhance the effects of treatment.
In Sanskrit, oil and love share a name - Sneha.

BOOK A TREATMENT
Abhyanga is traditionally translated from Sanskrit as "oil massage"or "to massage with oil". Deeply relaxing and rejuvenating, Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage involves the application and massage of warm, herb-infused, condition-specific oil all over the body. Long, rhythmic, sweeping massage strokes on the limbs and circular strokes on the joints create heat to enable deeper absorption of the oil. The warm oil deeply penetrates the skin to loosen ama (accumulated toxins) at a cellular level. Offering multiple health benefits, Abhyanga massage nourishes tissues, improves circulation, cleanses the skin and improves overall health. It balances all doshas but particularly vata. With its profound effect on the nervous system, Abhyanga elicits a deep sense of grounding and relaxation.
